Documentation
Check Any Used Car is a remote MCP connector. It gives Claude tools that look up vehicles sold in the US by VIN: free data from NHTSA, market values and title history from NMVTIS through VinAudit, an approved NMVTIS data provider. Nothing is installed on your computer.
Set up
Connector address: https://checkanyusedcar.com/api/mcp. You sign in once with an email or a Google account.
- Claude (web, desktop, iPhone, Android): add it in one click, or Customize, then Connectors, then Add custom connector.
- Claude Code:
claude mcp add --transport http check-any-used-car https://checkanyusedcar.com/api/mcp, then /mcp to sign in. - Cursor and other MCP apps: add
{"url": "https://checkanyusedcar.com/api/mcp"}to your MCP settings.
Tools
All tools are read-only: they look up records and return text. None of them changes anything in your accounts.
decode_vin(vin)- Free. Decodes the VIN (year, make, model, trim, engine, transmission, plant) and adds NHTSA safety recalls and owner complaints for that model year, and NHTSA crash-test ratings.
vehicle_history(vin)- The NMVTIS history: title brands, junk, salvage and insurance total-loss records, odometer readings with a rollback check, theft records, title history by state, and red flags. Uses one report credit; the same VIN within 30 days doesn't use another.
car_value(vin, mileage?, type?, condition?, known_damage?)- What the car is worth from comparable vehicles: retail (default), trade-in or wholesale, with the typical range, how many comparables it rests on and their price spread. Adjusts for mileage, condition (average, like_new, not_great) and known damage; a title brand, total loss, rollback or theft in your history report for the VIN is applied automatically. Uses one of the month's valuations (3 free, 30 with a plan); the same question within 7 days doesn't count again.
my_usage(none)- Shows the signed-in account, its plan, and the report credits and valuations left.
whoami(none)- Shows which account the connector is signed in with. Useful to check the connection.
Example prompts
- I'm looking at a 2016 Civic on Facebook Marketplace. The VIN is <17 characters>. Anything I should worry about?
- Here's a photo of the VIN sticker. Check the car's history and tell me what to ask the seller.
- This truck has a rebuilt title. Pull the history and tell me what a fair offer would be.
- Compare the recalls and complaint history of these two VINs.
- What's my car worth? VIN <17 characters>, 84,000 miles. And what would a dealer give me on trade-in?
- The seller wants $14,500 for this one. Is that fair for its mileage?
Data and limits
- Vehicles with a 17-character VIN (1981 and later) sold or titled in the United States. VINs are checked with the check digit before any lookup.
- Recalls, complaints and ratings come from NHTSA and are listed per model year. Whether a recall is still open on one car shows at nhtsa.gov/recalls with the VIN.
- History reports cover what NMVTIS holds; read what it covers and what it can't.
- Market values come from VinAudit's data on comparable vehicles in the US. They are estimates; condition, options and local demand move the real price.
- Free: VIN decoding up to 60 a day and 3 market values a month. Plans add 30 market values a month and 8 reports a month for $14.99, or 60 a year for $99 (pricing).
Privacy
The connector receives only the VIN Claude sends to a tool. It does not read your conversations, memory or files. Reports you buy are kept on your account for a year, or until you delete them. No report includes owner information. Full details: privacy policy.
Troubleshooting
- “Fails the VIN check digit”: a character was misread. Check it against the plate on the dashboard or the door sticker.
- Your plan doesn't show in Claude: ask Claude to run
